Server Issues *EXPLAINED*
Hey,
I am posting this announcement, because I like to keep our clients in the loop at all times. As you may know, within the past 2-3 days the server has been experiencing some problems. I am here to explain to our clients, what happened.
Firstly, we suffered from a DDoS attack, which can happen to any server at any moment in time. We investigated the issue and were able to find how it happened. We have now tightened our firewalls, and have added new safety precautions to our server. This problem has been solved.
Secondly, the high load seen in Service Status was caused by account(s) on the server that have been receiving too many in-coming hits or sending out to many emails at once. We know which account(s) have caused this issue, and the owners have been contacted already. Also, the 93% hard drive you see in Service Status, will also be fixed. We recently purchased a new hard drive, and will move some accounts onto the new hard drive, in order to free up some space.
Upgrades:
1. Upgraded PHP4 to the latest STABLE release (4.4.8).
2. Upgraded PHP5 to the latest STABLE release (5.2.4).
3. Upgraded MySQL to the latest STABLE release (5.0.45).
Thanks for understanding. :)
Add Funds to your Account
You can add funds to your account now. There is a minimum deposity of $10.00. This new feature is extremely useful, because if you are going away and you need to pay an invoice, it will automatically withdraw from your funds to pay the invoice.
In order to add funds:
1. Log into the Client Area.
2. On the client area homepage, you should see "Add Funds".
3. Select how much money you want to add, and then follow the paypal steps.
Very Important: In order for the invoices to be paid by the funds, you must add the funds before your invoices due date.
[Warning] TopSites
In the past week there have been issues on several servers which point back to TopSites installations. TopSites is a popular site ranking script which you may be familiar with.
The problem we see is that many different IPs (most are hijacked PCs located in Turkey, used as bot networks) are hammering these TopSites directories, acting as mini DoS attacks against those servers. The last security advisory for TopSites was last year, but apparently it remains unpatched. This does not give us much faith in the developers - it could have been fixed a long time ago, then we would not be dealing with this problem now.
The bottomline is that we are forced to disable the affected directories as we find them. We do recommend replacing this script with a similar one. We are likely disabling TopSites in all Fantastico panels.
